About the Artist

SUSAN K. BOYLE

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

My art education emphasized drawing, painting, and printmaking. I graduated from Arizona State University and began my career as a commercial artist working for several years in the Midwest and then in New York City. I wanted to be able to manage the world, and traveling seemed to be the best way to do that.

I joined an international airline and traveled extensively. Becoming increasingly interested in knowing what motivates people, I pursued a career in human resources. Throughout the pressures and demands of my professional and family life, I never stopped learning about art and about the nature of people, friends, and loved ones. I wanted to paint them all but I could not devote the time. Now I focus almost entirely on drawing and painting images of people.

Drawing from life, having a model in the studio, is my preferred way of working. My models are ordinary people, neighbors and friends, whose inner lives are often revealed in their gesture, expression, or demeanor. I strive to create compelling images that are fresh, honest, and immediate. My art exposes my perception of people and the world which balances humor with humanity.

The medium I currently prefer is ink sometimes in combination with other media, such as, caran d'ache, conté crayon, or collage.

BIOGRAPHY

Susan K. Boyle was born in Albany, NY and raised in Arizona. She grew up surrounded by orange groves in suburban Phoenix. Always interested in art, Susan took classes from a young age. She majored in art at Arizona State with a special interest in drawing and printmaking. Recruited during her senior year by Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, Missouri, upon graduation Susan began her career as a commercial artist at Hallmark. There she met other young artists, some recruited from art schools on the East Coast. They touted New York City as THE mecca for artists.

Ever adventurous, it wasn't long before Susan was living in NYC. She found work there that allowed her to pursue her art career and travel extensively. During her years in NYC, Susan's travels allowed her to study the masters in most of the major museums of the world as well as the work of modern day masters in galleries. Her favorite museums are the Vatican Museum in Rome, the Hermitage in Leningrad, and the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City. These years of art exploration and self study have given her a well rounded appreciation of art.

Susan continued to take art classes at every opportunity, through subsequent moves from New York to Los Angeles, to Georgia, and to Texas. While in Texas she took graduate level classes at Texas Womans University in Denton. The experience of being with serious, intensely dedicated artists was invaluable.

After several years in Texas, Susan relocated to Arizona. Now living in the high desert of Sierra Vista, with her husband, Susan continues to find new inspiration for her art and life.

Of her art, Susan says "I especially like the spare look of line drawings and of ink on paper. In order to make my ink drawings more expressive, I often apply the ink with a stick, brush, or with any other tool that might be within reach. As a result these drawings have a lively energy and freshness about them. They are honest and immediate, at times humorous, and always expressive."
